Hayman Island State School is located on Hayman Island in the Whitsunday group, approximately 50 kilometres from mainland Australia. The school operates in a remote island setting and is accessible to the children of staff and resident guests of Hayman Island Resort.
Access to Hayman Island is via resort-operated vessels, with the journey taking approximately 55 minutes from Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach. These services transport guests, staff, contractors and departmental visitors to and from the island.
Hayman Island State School provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment focused on student wellbeing, engagement and academic achievement. Students are taught in a multi-age classroom setting, enabling teaching and learning programs to be responsive to individual academic, social and emotional needs.
Teaching and learning programs are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and are contextualised to the local island environment where appropriate. The school’s approach is guided by its motto: Learning in Paradise.
The school is staffed by a teaching principal and a classroom teacher. Students are currently enrolled from Prep to Year 6. Small student numbers allow for highly individualised teaching and learning while maintaining curriculum expectations and consistency.
Hayman Island has had an operating primary school since 1956, when the island was owned by Reg Ansett. In 2006, the school marked its 50th anniversary, including a visit from the island’s first principal, Mrs Elvira Davies.
Families within the school community are employed by Hayman Island Resort, which provides ongoing support to the school. Communication with families and the broader community occurs through email, website updates, the school Facebook page and regular face-to-face contact.
